WEIGHT CATEGORY Since 2018, he has competed in 96kg and 109kg weight categories but has decided to focus on the former. "I am already 31 years old. And putting on weight is risky for my future health. And the ideal category for me would be exactly 96kg. Even then, after the [2012] Olympics in London, I said that in Tokyo I would perform in the 94kg category. That is, I would switch to 105kg category and would then come back. So, I am working according to the old plan. Now I weigh 100 kilograms, and I feel great. Just as it should be." (vesti.kz, 23 May 2019)
SANCTION In June 2016 he was suspended from competition for a minimum of two years after samples taken from him at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2012 Olympic Games in London retrospectively tested positive for a banned substance. In January 2018 the International Weightlifting Federation [IWF] announced that the samples were being considered as one single violation and that he would be eligible to return to competition in June 2018.
