WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL UPGRADE In March 2021 he was upgraded to the bronze medal position for combined total score in the +109kg category at the 2018 World Championships in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, following an anti-doping rule violation by the original bronze medallist, Uzbekistani weightlifter Rustam Djangabaev. "It is not the way I dreamed of doing it but it's a world championships medal, the first one for Brazil and I'll take it. This is going to help me keep pushing for the [2020] Olympic Games, it's a good motivation." He said he was not informed of the upgrade before the updated results appeared online. "It's really odd, I don't understand it. I found out about it when a coach spotted that the results had been changed on the IWF [International Weightlifting Federation] website, and Djangabaev had officially been disqualified." (insidethegames.biz, 24 Mar 2021)
FEDERATION DISPUTE He finished first in the +105kg category at the 2017 Pan American Championships in Miami, FL, United States of America, but was not declared the winner because he was not an official member of the Brazilian team at the event. In January 2017 he moved to Miami to set up a weightlifting academy, and was unable to travel back to Brazil for that year's national championships as he was trying to obtain a US green card. Enrique Montero, president of the Brazilian Weightlifting Federation, made the national championships the only qualifying event for the 2017 World Championships in Anaheim, CA, United States of America, and also left Reis out of the team for the Pan American championships. He went on to compete in Miami as an unofficial individual, so his result did not count. He was selected for the world championships after receiving the support of the Pan American Weightlifting Federation [PAWF] and the International Weightlifting Federation [IWF].
